Bouvardia Light Pistachio Cotton Velvet Crewel Pillow (16x16)


        Crewel work designs were inspired by source books of ornaments or embroidery pattern books that had been published in Europe since the 16th century. Palampores, hand-painted (stenciled) cotton fabrics imported during the 17th century to England from India, were clearly influential in developing such traditional crewel work designs as the tree of life pattern
      Artisans in a remote mountain village in Kashmir crewel stitch these blossoms, vines and leaves by hand, resulting in a lush pattern of richly shaded wool yarns on Linen, Cotton, Velvet, Silk Organza, Jute also backed in natural linen, Cotton, Velvet Silk Organza, Jute with a hidden zipper.

Designs range from the traditional to more contemporary patterns. The traditional design styles are often referred to as Jacobean embroidery featuring highly stylized floral and animal designs with flowing vines and leaves.
Many different embroidery stitches are used in crewelwork to create a textured and colorful effect. Unlike silk or cotton embroidery threads, crewel wool is thicker and creates a raised, dimensional feel to the work.
